How To Protect Yourself From Theft When Someone In Your Home Is A Drug Addict

Dennis Jenkins

Even though it can be unimaginable to think about, many drug addicts will steal anything that they can in order to chase a high. Many of them will also steal from anyone, including the people whom they love the most. If someone in your home is addicted to drugs, you may want to stand by your loved one. However, you could be at risk of being stolen from, so it is important to protect yourself. These are a few ways that you can do so.

Keep Valuables Locked in a Safe

If you have valuables in your home -- particularly smaller items that can be easily pocketed and sold for a decent sum of money, such as jewelry or gold coins -- it is important to keep them locked in a safe. Consider working with a locksmith to choose a safe that is secure and difficult to break into, and place the safe in a well-hidden area of your home to help prevent temptation.

Install a Lock on Your Bedroom Door

Another smart idea is to install a lock on your bedroom door. In many cases, it's a good idea to install a lock that is similar to one that would be installed on an exterior door -- one that can be locked and unlocked from the outside with a key. Then, not only can you lock your door when you are sleeping and are unable to keep an eye on things, but you can also lock the door when you aren't home or aren't able to keep an eye on your room, such as when you are at work. Keep items that you are afraid the drug addict might steal in this locked room whenever possible. A locksmith can help you choose the right lock for this purpose and can install it on your bedroom door for you.

Keep Your Purse or Wallet in Your Sight at All Times

Don't put it past a drug addict to steal straight from your purse or wallet, because it does happen. Make sure that you keep your cash and car keys in your sight at all times. If you are unable to do so, keep these items in your locked bedroom or your safe.

It can be heartbreaking to deal with a loved one's drug addiction, and it can become even more hurtful when you have to worry about someone you love stealing from you. Luckily, following these tips can help you protect yourself.
